Gaslighting Yourself

Gaslighting Yourself

Hello, my friends and welcome back to my table! I’m so happy you are here.

I have a question for you: Have you ever heard of gaslighting? What about gaslighting yourself? This is the topic for today’s episode and we are diving right in.

Gaslighting is defined as manipulating someone by psychological means into questioning their own sanity, reality, and perceptions. Over time gaslighting will wear down your self-confidence, leaving you even more vulnerable to more gaslighting.

Gaslighting is real, gaslighting is abusive. We often think of gaslighting as someone doing it to someone else, or a group. Throughout this episode, I’m going to challenge you to see how you may in fact be gaslighting yourself.

Some tactics of gaslighting are:

  • questioning things you know you did or said or your recollection of events,
  • Being  accused of being too sensitive or crazy,
  • Communication that your needs aren’t valid,
  • Expression of doubt about your state of mind and sanity,
  • Manipulated into taking all the blame or responsibility for things,

Ask yourself:

  • Do you find yourself questioning things you know you did or said or your recollection of events?
  • Do you express doubt about your state of mind and sanity?
  • Do you suffer from what we call “imposter syndrome”? I think imposter syndrome can be a sign of gaslighting yourself as well.
  • Do you frequently adopt someone else's version of reality over your own because you believe they are probably right and you are wrong?

So I ask you again, are you gaslighting yourself?

To combat these thoughts and patterns I invite you to ask contemplate:

  • What do I want?
  • What is my perception of this?
  • What do I think is true?
  • What is my Essence Compass showing me?

From here you will be better equipped to assess if you are doing the important work of personal development, and revealing your essence, or if you are gaslighting yourself or being gaslighted.

Again, gaslighting of any kind is about power. Episode 10 is all about power and if you think you are in a gaslighting situation, that will be a great one to relisten to.

Remember You are powerful, You are your own permission slip, You are the authority of your own life.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about today’s episode and about your experiences.
